The third quarter of 2017 has been a good one for the online gaming market in France. The aggregate gaming revenues stand at $639 million, which is a 23% year-on-year increase. It is interesting to note that sports betting has played a significant role in this development. Namely, that segment of the industry has shown a 23% year-on-year increase. The online poker segment has shown a 11% growth compared to 2016.
Big Profits from Betting
According to the report by ARJEL, one of the country’s main regulators, sports betting helped rake in $125 million over the three month period ending with September 2017. Not surprisingly, soccer was the leading choice of most bettors. The report indicates that 60% of all sports wagers were placed on soccer matches.
Apart from soccer, horse races were one of top choices for sports bettors. In total, there was $284 million in bets placed during the mentioned period. This translated into $70 million in yearly revenues, which is a 15% increase in relation to 2016.
The Number of Customer Growing
The same report showed that the number of people betting sports in the country has been on the rise. According to ARJEL, there were 301,000 active players during the Q3 of 2017. This is a boost of 26% compared to the same period of 2016. Namely, third quarter of 2016 saw 239,000 different players placing sports wagers.
The regulator was pleased with these numbers. According to the statement accompanying the report, this is a great indicator of the positive dynamics in the regulated betting market. The sharp increase in player numbers as well as the revenue growth spell a bright future for sports betting in the country.
Online Poker on the Rise
In addition to sports betting, the online poker segment seems to be showing a very positive trend. The third quarter of 2017 saw the biggest rise in revenue recorded in the past six years. Earnings from this segment climbed up to $67 million. A significant portion of this, $25 million, was generated by cash games. That’s a 5% increase in relation to 2016.
Online poker tournaments brought in $41 million. This was another steep year-on-year increase of 14%. Overall, the stakes have improved by 9%, which helped this industry segment finally surpass the $1 billion milestone.
Overall, although strictly regulated and segregated, the online gambling market in France seems to be doing quite well. It is no surprise that sports betting plays a huge role in this fact. This is one of the gaming segments that has always been very popular in Europe. We can only expect this positive trend to continue in the future, boosting the market further.
